Glossary Term: "void ab initio"

« Back to Glossary Index

is a legal term used to describe something that is considered void from the beginning or invalid from the outset. In legal contexts, it refers to actions, contracts, or laws that are fundamentally flawed or illegal right from their inception. When something is declared “void ab initio,” it is treated as though it never legally existed in the first place.

For instance, if a contract is found to be based on fraud or is against the law, a court might declare it “void ab initio,” meaning it is null and void from the moment it was created, and it holds no legal force whatsoever.
